If we’re going to go through the whole book of Proverbs talking about wisdom, we might as well discover if there is any benefit to us for learning to be wise. Yesterday I shared with you that anyone can become wise. We have the ability to seek and find wisdom, but if there is no benefit, why do it? That’s what I’ll share with you today.
Proverbs Chapter 2 gives us this,
2 Tune your ears to wisdom,
and concentrate on understanding.
3 Cry out for insight,
and ask for understanding.
4 Search for them as you would for silver;
seek them like hidden treasures.
5 Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
and you will gain knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord grants wisdom!
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
8 He guards the paths of the just
and protects those who are faithful to him.
9 Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair,
and you will find the right way to go.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will fill you with joy.
11 Wise choices will watch over you.
Understanding will keep you safe.
Confused? Yea I was at first as well. I kept reading over those short 10 verses thinking that it’s good, but I wasn’t understanding the benefit of being wise.
Then it hit me. Verse 6 says, “The Lord grants wisdom.” He chooses to give us wisdom and understanding to those that choose to be honest and walk with integrity. It is then, when wisdom is granted, do we begin to see the benefits of it. We learn to make decisions from a different point of view. One that asks, “What is the wise thing to do?” rather than “What do I want?”
When we begin to seek the wise path in life, we see how wisdom keeps us safe from some of the evil in the world. As it becomes more prevalent in our lives, it becomes more and more automatic.
So the next time you’re faced with a decision ask yourself, “What is the wise thing to do?” You may answer wrongly, but it’s like a muscle, the more you work it the stronger it becomes. The stronger wisdom becomes in your life, the better choices you will make.
